Sports Counseling

Certified Sports Counselors assist athletes in maximizing their mental and physical potential.

The American Psychological Association (APA) lists sports counseling among the fastest growing specialties in counseling and psychology. Sports counselors possess specialized counseling skills to improve the wellbeing, mental functioning, and physical performance of athletes and other members of the sport community such as trainers and coaches. The practices and techniques incorporated are rooted in the American Counseling Association code of ethics and the NCAA Mental Health Best Practices. Sports counseling improves therapeutic relationships and efficacy with sports counseling expertise and best-practice based strategies specially designed for student, collegiate, and professional athletes, athletic trainers, coaches, and all those involved in supporting athletes at all levels.

With over 25 years of experience our Sports Counseling Team focuses on the client and their main goals.

TAP senior consultant, Dr. Amy Alexander, a certified sports counselor, can provide individuals, teams at all levels, and other members of the sport and athlete communities with research-based mental wellness supports uniquely designed for each client. Along with the general stressors of twenty-first century life, athletes face additional, unique challenges. Athletes at all levels of competition report higher incidents of eating disorders, stress and anxiety-related mental health issues, feelings of aggression and being overwhelmed. These experiences can contribute to weaker athletic performance as well as more profound, long-term physical and psychological challenges that affect interpersonal and professional relationships and success.

Dr. Alexander also holds a master’s degree in education, as a certified school counselor, and a PhD in Counseling and Supervision. She is well qualified in assisting student athletes (SA’s) as well as professional athletes in deconstructing mental health concerns with over a quarter century of experience. Her approach is individualized for each client, incorporating her expertise in trauma and athlete mental wellness through specific intervention methods designed for each client.

“I do hope that people can relate and understand that it’s OK to not be OK, and it’s OK to talk about it. There are people who can help, and there usually is light at the end of the tunnel."

- Naomi Osaka

It was great to have TAP talk about diversity and equity in today’s training. The workshop exposed blind spots and opportunities for us to work for greater equity and greater understanding to assist in creating a welcoming culture that is inclusive to all here at Central Catholic High school.

The diversity, equity, and inclusion workshop was needed to move forward to enlighten administration, faculty, and staff on ways to get along. I would recommend that any university, educational facility, or business use TAP to provide a warm feeling workshop to advance you.

Central Catholic High School Cultural Inclusion Advisor

Today’s workshop on diversity, equity, and inclusion was very informative. The biggest takeaway for me was self-reflection; before you can discuss what’s going on in your school, you have to discuss how I contribute positively or negatively. The interactive portion of the presentation was very helpful.
